Yinshan Lake Tunnel, China’s deepest under-lake tunnel, is set to open to traffic at theend of June this year.
Although the tunnel is only 3.5 kilometers long, it is the deepest under-lake tunnel in the country, with an average depth of 10 meters. The common depth for a tunnel under a lake is within 7 meters. As an important channel connecting Wuzhong district and Suzhou Industrial Park, the tunnel will greatly alleviate traffic pressure nearby when open to traffic, cutting the travel time by at least half an hour.
With a speed limit of 80 km per hour, the two-way six-lane tunnel is the last completed part of Wuzhong section of the eastern extension to Nanhu Urban Expressway. The opening of the tunnel signifies that the whole section will go into operation.
The 6.9-kilometer-long Wuzhong section of the eastern extension to Nanhu Urban Expressway starts from Yinshan Overpass in the west, stretches over Changshu-Taizhou Expressway and Tongda Road, runs under Yinshan Lake and Yihu Road, passes along Dongfang Avenue, crosses over Suzhou-Shanghai Inner Port Line and Zhonghuan Expressway East Line, connects to Dongfang Avenue Overpass, and then extends as an elevated road to the destination.
