As the Spring Festival is drawing near, the city is surrounded by festive vibes. Lanterns have been set up and illuminated on Xietang Old Street, and will not go out till Lantern Festival.
With the traditional Chinese cultural elements as the core design idea, this year’s lantern show features Suzhou-style lanterns, a national intangible cultural heritage, to create different scenarios through patterns of green mountains and clean waters and ancient poems. The old street is vibrant with nearly 1,000 lanterns.
Suzhou-style lantern, also known as Sudeng in history, dates back to the Northern and Southern Dynasties (420-589). The lanterns are famous for the exquisite design and elaborate craftsmanship, and embody the artistic features of delicacy, intricacy, beauty and elegance. Suzhou-style lantern was listed in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage in June, 2008.
