Suzhou population in 2020 stood at 12.748262 million, 15.04 percent of the province’s total, making Suzhou the only city in Jiangsu Province with a population of more than 10 million, according to the data from the seventh national census in Jiangsu Province released yesterday.
Compared with the data in the sixth national census conducted ten years ago, the population in Suzhou has increased by 2.288372 million, the most across the province.
What is the national census?
The once-in-a-decade national census is one of three regularly-conducted surveys underpinning China’s policymaking. Its findings can shed light on the country’s demographic changes over time, and are closely watched as vital references for policymaking, ranging from birth to eldercare to employment.
Suzhou’s total population and its population growth during the 10 years both rank first in the province. Why did so many people choose to live in Suzhou?
A double-faced embroidery
Suzhou’s modern side and its ancient one add radiance and beauty to each other, turning the city into a double-faced embroidery.
Different from the ancient city area, the 5A-class tourist attraction Jinji Lake is full of modern air. You can go on a stroll there and enjoy the great scenery by the lake.
A capital of delicacies
There are innumerable delicacies in Suzhou throughout the year. You can taste Suzhou-style snacks on Pingjiang Road, try various styles of cooking on Fenghuang Street, sample the delights of Japanese food on Huaihai Street, and have a cup of Bi Luo Chun tea or pick loquats in Dongshan area. You will certainly find your favorite food in Suzhou.
A cultural treasure-house
As the cradle of Jiangnan culture, Suzhou boasts a vast array of intangible cultural heritages. It has long been “a capital of crafts” and “a land of zhuangyuan (candidates who took top place in annual national-level recruitment exams for officials)”, and now it is also praised as “a city of academicians”.
A favorable business environment
Suzhou enjoys the best business environment and the greatest comparative advantage as its government strongly supports the investment and R&D of enterprises.
Up to present, over 5,000 foreign-funded enterprises have settled in China (Jiangsu) Pilot Free Trade Zone Suzhou Area. Besides, SND has been listed in the first batch of Sino-Japan-Korea (Jiangsu) Industrial Cooperation Demonstrative Districts in Jiangsu Province and is stepping up its efforts to push forward the Sino-Japan Green Industry Innovation and Cooperation Demonstration Zone.
Suzhou is embracing all opportunities and striving to become more and more open and inclusive.
