A large number of local seasonal foods have come onto the market recently with lower prices. Scroll down and you may find your favorite one.
Water caltrop
One of the eight aquatic plants of Suzhou, water caltrop is also known as “Suzhou Red.” Its fruit will be available in large bulk in a few days and priced at 8 yuan per jin (500 grams). However, due to the unusual hot weather this year, its yield is expected to drop 20 percent from last year and the size will shrink as well.
Gorgon nut
Several plantations across the city have announced their gorgon nuts are ready to hit the shelves. The price is about the same as last year — 120 yuan per jin.
Seafood
One jin of swimming crabs sold for 70 to 80 yuan last month. But since the harvest season kicked off, the price has plummeted to around 50 yuan per jin.
Besides swimming crabs, other kinds of seafood such as hairtail, yellow croaker and squid also see a drop in price. It is estimated that by the time when fishing boats return and bring back more seafood, the price will further fall.
Yellow peach
Yellow peaches grown in Zhenhu subdistrict, SND already appeared on the market last week. Though the output slightly decreases from last year because of the weather, the price remains the same and the fruit itself tastes much sweeter than previous years.
